In this book, Paul Billheimer argues that the greatest tragedy in the history of the church is the sin of disunity, probably causing more offense toward the cause of Christ than any other factor. In this moving and thought-provoking message, he reminds Christians that fellowship is based on common spiritual parentage and that unity of heart must take precedence over unity of doctrine.
While the author’s plea for unity is strong, he is not demanding compromise on historical doctrinal issues nor abandonment of theological discussion on issues of interpretation. Rather, Billheimer’s great burden is the fact that Christians have allowed such discussion to become a source of disunity in the body of Christ. He looks at such topics as the Calvinism/Arminian controversy and the Charismatic movement, pointing out the attitudes toward these and related issues which have disrupted true Christian unity.

“Here is a word that will sting, rebuke, and disturb, but in the end, I predict, will bless. It is likely that you will not agree with everything in this volume. It is just as likely that you need not agree with everything herein to be benefitted by it. In his usual style, Paul E Billheimer captures the true essence of the issue in the religious world today and lays bare the bones of contention with rare grace. His practice of overall fairness to all may be unnerving to some. To many of his observations you will say an immediate “Amen!” To others, you will say a painful “O me!” Read it through without argument. Then feel free to put its contents to the scriptural test. That will be much less painful than running it through the denominational filter. You will hurt, you will doubtless feel some irritation, and you may even weep a little. You may rise to argue a point, you may sink to some despair, but eventually you will be blessed if you wait for the Spirit’s “Amen!” I commend this book to your studied attention. ”
