About This Book
THE MARRIAGE RING is a historic reprint of Dr. Thomas Dewitt Talmage’s work originally published in 1886. Usually a book 100 years old holds little value for today’s readers, except as a glimpse of life then. This volume is different. The message of the book is timeless and vital because although American society has changed greatly, human nature has not. The decline of marriage and the home is even more alarming today than it was 100 years ago, and sin is still the root problem of every culture.
Dr. Talmage preached these chapters as sermons, seeking to spare those considering marriage from making a mistake in the choice of a mate by urging much prayer for God’s guidance – since God alone knows the heart of every man and woman.
Dr. Talmage also sought to set forth the responsibilities of each marriage partner, spotlight the problems that arise in any marriage, and stress the need for working these out together, always remembering the vows made to each other and to God. Today’s reader will be amazed to see how accurate Dr. Talmage’s forecasts were. There is much here that is both stimulating and challenging. This great preacher-author presents many spiritual insights and principles which the reader can adapt to meet current personal needs.
Because of this, CLC is re-publishing the seven key chapters of this book in order that the “alarm call” may again be sounded…so that men and women will allow God to guide them to His choice of mate, and that they will invite Him to be the head of their home – to His glory and praise.
Mr. Robert L. Van Alstine, a former pastor of Lifegate Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon, and a past director of Baptist Family Agency, Seattle, Washington, served as compiling editor for this revised edition.
He has taken some editorial liberty to help the reader span communication gaps, but still sought to maintain the integrity of Talmage’s burden and purpose. Actually, the book has been changed little. A few chapters and paragraphs have been omitted because they failed to add directly to the purpose. To enhance readability, some phraseology has been altered and a number of expressions modernized, but without changing the meaning or lessening the potential impact.
However, where figures are give, they are Dr. Talmage’s figures from more than 100 years ago, and the reader should realize that most are much larger today.
Mr. Van Alstine states, “I am convinced that lifetime permanence is God’s intent for marriage.”
